niki hampson - artist's statement

I am a papermaking artist based in the Courtyard at Dalby Forest where the idyllic surroundings of my studio inspire my work.

Having trained and worked in textiles for 25 years, I like to mimic fabric techniques to produce decorative and textural paper pieces, incorporating natural and recycled finds.

My current  work involves making paper from a strong plant pulp and pleating it whilst wet to form sculptural waves. Its translucent quality lends itself to the  lampshades and backlit art pieces that I design and make. A local woodcraftsman forms the bases and frames from discarded pieces of wood creating a complementary finish to the shades.

In contrast I work a great deal with recycled waste paper to achieve a diverse range of coloured and textured pulps which I use to produce albums, cards, decorative packaging  and small bowls. I also use a combination of techniques to create pictures and decorated mirrors. 

My greatest enjoyment comes from sharing my skills and inspiring others through workshops, courses and demonstrations.
